Notebook: Bulls 92, Nets 90

Devin Kharpertian, for NBA.com
Posted Thu Apr 04, 2013 11:18 PM - Updated Thu Apr 04, 2013 11:18 PM

THE FACTS: In the fourth and final regular season meeting between these two teams this season, the Chicago Bulls won a 92-90 thriller that went down to the final possession. The Bulls scored the final five points, taking the lead for good on a Nate Robinson floater over Brook Lopez's outstretched fingertips. The Nets had a chance to tie it in the final seconds, but an open Lopez jumper rimmed out as time expired. The Bulls were powered by Carlos Boozer, who finished with 29 points and 18 rebounds, while the Nets got big games from Deron Williams (30 points, 10 assists) and Lopez (28 points, 5 rebounds).

QUOTABLE: "We started off so soft defensively and low energy on offense and that's a tough combination. THe good thing was that we changed it. We had a lot of guys step up and do a good job."
-- Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau.

THE STAT: The Nets turned the ball over eight times in the first three quarters combined... and eight more times in the fourth quarter alone.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Former star of "The Sopranos" James Gandolfini and WWE wrestler Randy Orton were in attendance.

THE STAT: Boozer's double-double was his 38th of the season.

QUOTABLE II: "Let's start with the post-up, I felt like I was in the key for a little, so I was looking through my options of where to kick it out to, I was trying to find D-Will (Williams) or Joe (Johnson), it was just a terrible play on my part. The next play D-Will hit me with a good pass, I didn't finishes throng though and the same thing happened on the third play, I got a good look and it didn't go down. But at that point though you can't really blame the last play for what happened previously."
-- Brooklyn Nets center Lopez on the game's final few possessions.

NOTABLE: Nets guard Joe Johnson returned to the starting lineup after missing the past five games with a quad contusion and sore heel. Johnson scored just one point in the first half before hitting three three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help keep the Nets afloat. Johnson finished with 12 points on 4-11 shooting. The Bulls' win improved their record to 41-33, making them the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and pulling them within 1.5 games of Brooklyn for the fourth seed. The Bulls also own the tiebreaker, so should the teams end the season with the same record, Chicago would have home-court advantage in the playoffs.

Notebook: Nuggets 95, Mavericks 94

THE FACTS: Andre Iguodala scored on a driving layup with 2.8 seconds left and the Denver Nuggets rallied to beat the Dallas Mavericks 95-94 on Thursday for their 19th straight home win.

It was a costly win for the Nuggets after forward Danilo Gallinari was hurt on a drive to the basket with 4:27 left in the first half. Gallinari's left knee buckled as he dribbled into the lane and he fell to the floor. He was helped off by teammates Quincy Miller and Timofey Mozgov.

He is scheduled for an MRI on Friday.

Denver moved a half game ahead of Memphis and two games ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers for third in the Western Conference.

Corey Brewer scored 23 points and Andre Miller had a season-high 22 for Denver, which is 35-7 since Jan. 1.

Brandan Wright led the Mavericks with 16 points. Dallas fell 3.5 games back of the Lakers for the eighth and final seed in the Western Conference.

QUOTABLE: "I can't deny, it didn't look good. I usually look at the player's face. He was scared. But I've had ones look bad and [the MRI] turned out to be OK. Nene went down a couple of years ago and it was just a sprain."
-- Nuggets coach George Karl on Gallinari's injury

THE STAT: The Nuggets hit just 19-for-30 free throws but they got to the line more than Dallas. The Mavericks attempted just 10 foul shots.

TURNING POINT: With the Nuggets down one with 10.8 seconds left, Kenneth Faried missed two free throws, but Brewer snuck in and got the offensive rebound. Denver called a timeout and set up the final play. Iguodala drove through traffic and put in the winning shot.

TURNING POINT II: Brewer was shrewd and calculating when he came from the side to block Anthony Morrow's 23-footer at the buzzer to preserve the win.

QUOTABLE II: "I knew he was going to go hard right. Once he went hard right I knew he was going to shoot it because there were only 2.8 seconds. I knew I could block it. I didn't want to go at him so I came from the side."
-- Corey Brewer on the game-saving block

HOT: Miller showed age isn't a factor on a back-to-back. The 37-year-old veteran had a big game scoring 13 of his points in the second half to help Denver improve to 34-3 at home, the best home record in the NBA.

NOT: Gallinari's injury. With the Nuggets playing well despite losing Ty Lawson for a few weeks they can hardly afford losing their other leading scorer. But it looks like they could be heading into the playoffs without one or both.

QUOTABLE III: "It's tough when you have two of your main scorers out in Ty and Gallo. Hopefully nothing is torn. We found a way to pull that game out and that's what you need at this point of the season."
-- Andre Miller

GOOD MOVE: The Nuggets made Dirk Nowitzki a non-factor in the game. He attempted just 10 shots, four in the second half, and scored 13 points. Denver's defense forced Nowitzki to give up the ball, and it forced him into a key turnover with 20 seconds left that led to the Nuggets' winning play.

BAD MOVE: The Mavericks were sharing the ball and keeping it moving in the third quarter but got stagnant in the fourth.

QUOTABLE IV: "We started making the extra pass, the ball wasn't sticking. That's when we got that run and got the lead. When we stopped doing that they got the lead. It went from sugar to [garbage] that quick. When we share the ball we're one of the best teams in the league."
-- Dallas forward Shawn Marion

ROOKIE WATCH: Nuggets rookie Evan Fournier scored just three points after pouring in a combined 37 his past two games but he played solid in 19 minutes. He might be called upon even more if Gallinari's injury is serious.

NOTABLE: The last time Denver won 19 straight at home was Jan 28-April 20, 1989 when Doug Moe was the coach. The club record is 20 set four years earlier. ... Faried finished with 12 points and 19 rebounds. ... Wright had six rebounds to go with his 16 points. It's the second time in three games he's reached those numbers.

UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Friday @ Sacramento, Sunday @ Portland, Wednesday vs. Phoenix. For the Nuggets, Saturday vs. Houston, Wednesday vs. San Antonio, Friday, April 12 @ Dallas.

Notebook: Thunder 100, Spurs 88

Randy Renner, for NBA.com
Posted Fri Apr 05, 2013 1:21 AM - Updated Fri Apr 05, 2013 1:21 AM

THE FACTS: The Oklahoma City Thunder moved to within a half game of first place in the Western Conference playoff race with a thrilling 100-88 win over the San Antonio Spurs at a sold-out and roaring Chesapeake Energy Arena. Thunder All-Stars Russell Westbrook (27) and Kevin Durant (25) combined for 52 points in OKC's 55th win of the season, tying the franchise's top win mark in the Oklahoma City era.

Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard each had 24 for the Spurs. Point guard Tony Parker struggled most of the night with soreness in his shins. He played only two minutes of the fourth quarter before being taken out of the game by Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich and finished with just two points on 1-for-6 shooting.

The Spurs (56-20) have one more win than Oklahoma City (55-20) but the teams are now tied in the all-important loss column and for the moment the Thunder own the tie-breaker.

Oklahoma City got a huge night from veteran guard Derek Fisher, who hit four 3-pointers in the first half and another in the second half to finish with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting (5-for-7 on 3-pointers). The rest of the OKC bench managed just seven points, sixth man Kevin Martin had just two points on 1-for-6 shooting. Thabo Sefolosha and Serge Ibaka each had 11 for the Thunder and Ibaka added 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Westbrook had seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals to go along with his 27 points and Durant added nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks to his 25 points. But Durant also had turnover troubles, giving the ball back to San Antonio six times.

Besides Duncan and Leonard, the Spurs only had one other player in double figures, Gary Neal came off the bench to score 14.

Oklahoma City held the Spurs to just 39.8 percent shooting and outscored them 19-3 on the fast break.

QUOTABLE: "Guys have to step up, tonight it was Fish, he made plays and he made shots. He knows how to play, he knows where to be. You don't have to make every shot but you have to make plays."
-- Thunder head coach Scott Brooks

QUOTABLE II: "Oklahoma City played more aggressive than we did and more consistent than we did all night long. They did a great job. Everybody has problems during the season but to have Manu [Ginobili] and now Tony [Parker] go down this late in the season is tough. Tony just had to stop it's something with his shins."
-- Gregg Popovich

THE STAT: Fisher had scored a total of 13 points over his last nine games. Tonight he was 6-for-8 (17 points) off the OKC bench. The rest of the Thunder bench players were a combined 2-for-12 (seven points)

TURNING POINT: A Durant 3-pointer with 3:14 left in the game gave Oklahoma City the breathing room it needed. OKC led by just five points when Durant hit his shot, extending the lead to eight. The Thunder had led by as many as 20 points earlier in the game while going on runs of 23-5 and 15-2.

QUOTABLE III: "I just have to get healthy. I'm not going to talk about all my stuff, I've got a lot of stuff going on but I just have to get healthy. Like I said it's not an excuse and OKC, I give them a lot of credit they played great. Durant was great, Russell played great and they just beat us tonight."
-- Tony Parker

HOT: Thunder finished first quarter with an 8-0 run and shot 54.5 percent in the quarter...Duncan was 4-for-5 in the first quarter...Fisher hit his first four 3-point attempts and finished the half 4-for-5 (12 points).

NOT: San Antonio shot 38.9 percent (7-for-18) in first quarter...Westbrook was 4-for-11 (10 points) in the first half...Parker was 1-for-6 (two points) at halftime...San Antonio shot 38.9 percent in the fourth quarter...OKC hit just 35 percent.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The 104th consecutive sellout inside Chesapeake Energy Arena. Among those in the crowd Emmy Award winning actor William H. Macy, who is in Oklahoma City shooting a movie.

GOOD MOVE: Parker and Tiago Splitter had hurt the Thunder in earlier games this season so OKC worked on ways to slow them down during their extended practice time this past week. In the first half it worked well, Parker was 1-for-6 (two points) and Splitter was 0-for-2.

GOOD MOVE, TOO: The Spurs wanted to limit OKC's trips to the free throw line by defending well but not fouling. Mission accomplished in the first three quarters. The Thunder came in leading the NBA in average free throws made (22.8) and attempted (27.6) per game. Going into the fourth quarter OKC had attempted only seven free throws, making six. Oklahoma City finished 12-for-13 at the line, a little less than half their average.

NOTABLE: The Spurs were playing their fourth game in five nights while the Thunder were playing for the first time in five nights. Oklahoma City now controls its own destiny, win out and the Thunder have the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

UP NEXT: For the Spurs, Saturday vs. Atlanta, Wednesday @ Denver, Friday vs. Sacramento. For the Thunder, Friday @ Indiana, Sunday vs. New York, Tuesday @ Utah.
