Gasol, Young propel Lakers past Warriors 102-95
OS ANGELES (AP) -- Pau Gasol and Nick Young did a remarkable job keeping the Los Angeles Lakers together without their two injured stars.
The Golden State Warriors had better take notes, because their injury problems just got worse.
Gasol had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Young scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half, and the Lakers took advantage of Stephen Curry's absence for a 102-95 victory over Golden State on Friday night.
Jordan Farmar and Steve Blake scored 14 points apiece as Los Angeles returned from four days off to win consecutive games for the first time all season.
Jordan Hill added 10 points and nine rebounds as the Lakers clicked even without Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash, hitting 11 3-pointers and outworking the prolific Warriors down the stretch. Los Angeles calmly maintained a big lead throughout the fourth quarter of its 11th straight home win over its upstate rival since March 2008.
''We're finally finding some consistency,'' Gasol said. ''We're finally putting good efforts mentally and physically together.''
Gasol had a big offensive game at an opportune time: The Spanish 7-footer pledged $1,000 for every point he scored against the Warriors to UNICEF disaster relief in the Philippines.
Gasol acknowledged thinking about his pledge with every basket, and he began the evening with another concern after hearing news of his brother Marc's sprained left knee in Memphis.
''I had too many things on my mind,'' Gasol said. ''I definitely had that motivation of scoring tonight for the Philippines. Once I started knocking down those outside shots, it opened things up for me.''
David Lee had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Harrison Barnes scored 20 points in the Warriors' second straight loss without Curry, who missed both games with a concussion.
Golden State then lost Andre Iguodala, who replaced Curry as the Warriors' point guard. Iguodala had six points and six assists before limping to the locker room in the third quarter with a left hamstring injury.
''Once I heard a pop, I knew it was serious,'' Iguodala said. ''This one kind of worries me a little bit. I'll take it serious, I'm sure. ... I'm not even

Kobe Bryant is going to play for the Lakers again pretty soon. We don't know when, we don't know how he will look as he gets back into game shape, but we know the return is imminent. We always knew that, though, but we're officially closing in on a return date. He's practicing with the team for the first time since his Achilles popped and the Lakers are 5-7 without him.
Things are about to get complicated in Los Angeles.
There are many angles to consider with the return of Kobe Bryant. Even if he's 25 percent less effective and plays limited minutes early on it's a given he will give the team a boost. Forget the nuances of defense and offense for a moment and consider that the Lakers are relying on Nick Young, Xavier Henry, Wesley Johnson and Jodie Meeks to handle small forward and shooting guard duties. They've done well. As Kanye would say, #NODISRESPECT, but they aren't Kobe.
The Lakers' offense, for as reasonably "good" it was projected to be, is still near the bottom of the league in efficiency. 100.6 points per 100 possessions (per Basketball-Reference) isn't what most had envisioned for this squad -- that's 25th out of 30. You'd have to go back to the 1975-1976 Lakers to find a worse offensive rating in franchise history. This team is performing historically bad on offense.
Kobe immediately boosts that even if he's sitting in a chair at the elbow putting up shots while blindfolded.
If the season ended today (you know, 12 games into the year) the Lakers would be on the outside of the playoffs looking in. That's not a big deal, really, because it's still stupid early in the season. They're 1.5 games out of the eighth seed, belonging to the Dallas Mavericks and their 6-4 record with Monta Ellis.
Let's not think about the standings right now, though. Those really don't matter all that much this early in the season. The Lakers are playing hard and exceeding expectations together and the wins have been a blast to watch. The year has already been more uplifting than the entire Dwight Howard campaign, and that's with Steve Nash being reduced to broken status a few games in. But the overarching reality still matters, and this Lakers team isn't going to win a title. The rebuild is still coming. The 2014 NBA Draft is still going to be incredibly important to the team.
They clearly aren't tanking, but they aren't contenders. Enter Kobe.
Who knows how the team performs once they have one of the greatest players in NBA history to fill up the

Kobe on Dwight Howard DOWNLOAD CLIP
IN rt II of our three part series with Kobe Bryant, he discusses the impending free agency of Dwight Howard, including why it's critical that Howard arrives at his decision on his own.
Below is a transcription of some of Bryant's key points:
Q: On L.A.'s roster for next season:
Bryant: I think it really depends on what Dwight decides to do.
Q: On why he wants Howard to stay with the Lakers:
Bryant: I think his talent level, his defensive prowess. We saw what he could do at the end of the year when we all started clicking … I think that makes him extremely, extremely valuable
.
Q: On the importance of Howard arriving at his own decision on where to play:
Bryant: It has to be his decision. The last thing you want to do is convince a person that they want to be here. If you have to convince them when challenges or adversity comes up next season, it's very easy to say, 'Well they had to convince me to be here anyway, I really didn't want to be here, I'd rather be (somewhere else) but they sold me on it.' You want it to be his decision. When it's something that's rooted inside of him, it's something he champions. I just want to be there to assist his decision.
Q: On what the Lakers mean to him:
Bryant: L.A. is home for me. It's the longest place I've ever stayed as a kid moving around. Being in one place for 17 years was completely foreign for me. But this is home. With the organization going forward you're going to expect the same old, same old. Figuring it out, figuring it out now. I hear the critics (of) the roster, everything is up in the air … it may seem that way now but the dust will settle. We'll have a team out there on the floor that's going to be a contender.

2012-13 Top 10 Moments: #7
even in his 17th season, Kobe Bryant posted one of the better statistical years of his career, his field-goal percentage (46.3) at its highest since 2008-09 in large part because of his finishing ability at the rim.
Bryant provided several highlight reel dunks during the 2012-13 campaign, the spring in his legs looking nearly as spry as the once 18-year-old who won the 1997 NBA Dunk Contest.
In a Jan. 4 road contest at Staples Center facing the Clippers, and the Lakers trailing early in the first quarter, Bryant played the passing lanes perfectly, deflecting a pass from Chris Paul. He gathered the ball a little past midcourt, took two dribbles, took off from nearly outside the paint and slammed it home emphatically over Paul.
On the fourth game of their annual Grammy road trip in early February, the Lakers visited the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the first time. Deadlocked at 80 and the shot clock winding down, Bryant drove the lane and threw down a tear of the plantar fascia in his right foot and being without the services of Dwight Howard (torn labrum in right shoulder) and Metta World Peace (suspension).
Nearly a month later, déjà vu.

Finishing At the Rim
Finishing shots at the rim at a high rate of efficiency is a category that can make a big difference over the course of an NBA season.
Whether through front court or back court players, having an elevated conversion percentage inside goes a long way towards overall offensive efficiency, where the Lakers finished eighth on the season (105.8) amongst NBA teams.

SPOX gibt Antworten.
Dwight Howard ejected from what could be his last Lakers game, Kobe Bryant returns to bench (Videos)
During the first quarter of Sunday night’s San Antonio Spurs 103-82 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, Dwight Howard received a technical foul for “holding his ground” and elbowing Spurs guard Cory Joseph after Dwight was intentionally fouled by several Spurs. During TNT’s halftime presentation in the middle of that Game 4, Charles Barkley disagreed with colleague Shaquille O’Neal on the TNT set, pointing out that Howard’s show of machismo probably wasn’t the smart move, considering the NBA fact that one more technical foul would lead to his ejection from what would end up being the Lakers’ final game of the season.
Duncan leads Spurs' rout, pushing Lakers to brink
By GREG BEACHAM

LOS ANGELES (AP) After 16 seasons, Tim Duncan knows the NBA postseason is no time for mercy. Particularly when an opponent is down and seemingly ready to go out.
In the opening minutes of Game 3, Duncan made three consecutive baskets and blocked Dwight Howard's shot, dominating with his usual ruthless grace.
He put the San Antonio Spurs ahead to stay, and they ended up handing the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers their biggest home playoff loss in franchise history.
After a 120-89 victory Friday night, all that's left is the finish - something Duncan and the Spurs also know how to do pretty well.
